Individual Holistic Therapies in Nursing Homes

It's a unique activity combination, that can significantly improve the well-being of elderly people, and also help with many health conditions like arthritis, depression, dementia, chronic pain, high blood pressure, chest infections and more. The sessions are created in a way to create a relaxing and calming experience for
people who may need it the most, but also can be fulfilled with joy and uplifting
atmosphere. All depends on individual resident's needs, and it's focused on the
person-centred approach. However, each session includes several therapies, like
aromatherapy, sound/music therapy, Chromotherapy, gentle massages, or professional
therapeutic chat that often leads to beautiful "butterfly moments".

This unique package of Holistic Therapies can be very beneficial for residents on Comfort or Palliative Care as well as The End of Life Care.

Aromatherapy

A treatment that uses natural plant extracts to promote health and well-being.
Those aromatic essential oils are used medicinally to improve the health of the body,
mind, and spirit. It enhances both physical and emotional health. A study has found
that several essential oils are effective for treating symptoms of dementia including
anxiety, sleep problems, and even memory and cognitive function. They can help
calm the patient and suppress aggression, agitation, and other psychotic symptoms in
people who suffer from dementia. The use of aromatherapy as a complementary
treatment for dementia lately has gained deserved immense popularity.

Aromatherapy can be performed in many different ways. Depends on the personal
needs of each person. There are various effective and safe approaches for people who
suffer from dementia or generally live in a Nursing home.
 Therapeutic oils can be gently massaged through the skin.
 We can use cold or warm compresses (depends on client's needs).
 Safe Inhalations (with the use of diffuser) also can have a place.

Those are only 3 from many methods that aromatherapists use to help their clients. If
properly performed they can be equally effective. It all depends on the client's wish or
health state. The three mentioned above ways are save to work with people in the
nursing homes, so during our session, we will use just them, unless the client's health
condition will allow/require for something else. This would be of course discussed
with the nurse who cares for such resident.

Music therapy

- The use of music to address the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of a
group or individual.
It isn't just listening to music, but it's an evidence-based clinical use of musical
interventions to improve clients' quality of life. Music therapists use music and its
many facets-physical, emotional, mental, social, aesthetic, and spiritual, to help clients
improve their health in cognitive, motor, emotional, communicative, social, sensory,
and educational domains by using both active and receptive music experiences.
Special techniques are also effective in alleviating pain, both physical and mental.
Furthermore, music therapy also helps people in managing their stress levels in a
more adaptive manner, something that also affects their overall well-being.
In addition to this, it is also used to enhance memory and helps people in expressing
their feelings in a healthy and therapeutic manner. Older adults who have been
suffering from dementia, Alzheimer’s and other mental problems have shown a
positive response when they have been made to undergo music therapy. Music
therapy has led to a decrease in their agitated and aggressive behaviour and had also
led to a reduction in the symptoms of dementia. Music therapy can also improve an
individual’s mood and also leads to improved cooperation of individuals in helping
out with daily chores or managing their own basic activities themselves, such as
taking a bath. Furthermore, it is also said that music therapy may have a potential link
to a decreased risk of brain diseases and heart diseases, especially in elderly
individuals who are suffering from dementia.

Sound Therapy

differs from popular music therapy by using the specific sound, and more precisely its
frequency, as almost everything we experience in the universe is simply our
perception of waves.
When sound waves reach our ears, they are converted into electrical signals that travel
up the auditory nerve into the auditory cortex, the part of the brain that processes
sound. Once sound waves reach our brains, they trigger responses in our bodies. This
process alters our emotions, releases hormones, and triggers certain impulses.
Sound healing therapy improves many facets of the patient’s life, including emotional
and social development, cognitive and motor functioning, and psychological and
psychiatric health.
Healing with sound happens in a number of ways. Patients listen or sing along,
improvise musical acts, meditate, chant, and play musical instruments. Some
practitioners subject the patient to specifically crafted sounds to induce positive
brainwaves.
Practitioners have documented clinical case studies that demonstrate the positive
effect of sound therapy. A recent study conducted by the British Academy of Sound
Therapy (BAST) found that 95% of clients suffering from stress-related disorders felt
an increased state of calm following treatment.

Chromotherapy

Chromotherapy, also known as colour therapy, affect emotions and the senses. It may
calm, energise or balance depending on what colours are used. There is enough
scientific evidence that shows how we respond emotionally and psychologically to
colours. Different colours have different effects on the mind and body. For one
moment, reflect on reactions created by various colours you have encountered, for
example, a refreshing soft blue sky, a vibrant yellow room, a stimulating red suit or a
sultry black dress. All these colours create a response from our senses.

In the therapy session, I use a special lamp that lights in the desired colour and creates
an atmosphere perfect to induce healing and regeneration of the body, reduce mental
stress and turmoil, expands and stimulates the mind, energises and rejuvenates the
body's energies, calms and relaxes tensions and anxieties.

I'm the fully qualified holistic therapist of the therapies mentioned above, as well
as NLP and Cognitive Behavior therapy practitioner, and successfully provide this
kind of service to people since last 6 years under my registered business. I also work
as a care assistant for more than 13 years, and can confidently say that I learn a lot of
important things about people who suffer from dementia, and nursing homes'
residents in general. As I am passionate about this subject, I decided to do something
more, therefore finished several courses and created this activity package.
The session usually takes about 20 minutes per residents (can be longer) but it
depends on their individual needs, and also can be discussed with you to meet your
expectations but still provide high standardized therapy for each client. After few
sessions, it may be possible to match few residents' personalities and their reactions to
the therapies, therefore group sessions may be created, which means that even more
residents would be able to participate in this activity within the same time frame.
As a well experienced, empathetic care assistant and professional therapist, I can
quickly establish rapport with residents and then proceed with the main part of the
session as described above. The activity would be ideally performed in a resident's
room to reduce distractions. The eventual group sessions may be performed in some
kind of therapy room or even day room that would be temporarily adapted for the
therapy (just as it is for Sonas sessions).
If you think your residents also will benefit from this form of activity, feel free to
contact me. As I mentioned earlier, I professionally practice the therapies I offer for
your nursing home. However, these sessions are newly and precisely created for
people who live in healthcare settings, especially for those who suffer from dementia.
I decided to offer this service, for your place first, as I already work there and
introducing it there would be easier. That's why now, I can offer you all of this for as
little as €30 per hour of therapy, which would allow about 3 residents to enjoy it and
benefit from it during that time. If you wish we can change it to €10 per resident for a
single session. It's a relatively small investment when comparing to similar therapies,
and to how much other therapists charge. I also provide all the equipment and tools to
perform the activity (like essential oils, lamp etc). On top of that, my sessions include
a couple of therapies basically at the same time, which gives more benefits for the
residents and also more activity would be performed and documented in the nursing
home.

I'm sending you this offer as I trust we may have similar goals here. To provide some

kind of unique and useful activity to our residents, which can improve their well-
being. To make them feel better, healthier, and mainly happier. Themselves, and their

families, as the relatives may be able to notice the difference in their loved ones
behaviour, mood, and health.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. I'd be more than happy to discuss
with you what more we could do to make this nursing home even better place.
